Wisdom Tooth Extraction: When Is It Necessary?

Common Complications Associated with Wisdom Teeth
When third molars erupt normally in the oral cavity, they typically do not cause potential issues. Unfortunately, this is not the case among the majority. Many people experience oral health issues because of wisdom teeth, some of which include:
- Impaction: Wisdom teeth often remain impacted, either partially or fully, within the jawbone. This can lead to severe discomfort, jaw pain, inflammation of the gums, and other symptoms.
- Teeth crowding: Even when wisdom teeth fully emerge, they can exert excessive pressure on the adjacent teeth, leading to crowding. It can happen due to a smaller jaw size or insufficient jaw space.
- Pain: Whether new third molars are coming in or remain impacted, you will most likely suffer from pain. It may range from a dull ache to a sharp, throbbing sensation. It can also radiate to the jaw, neck, or ears.
- Gum infections: Partially erupted third molars can cause gum inflammation, resulting in a condition known as pericoronitis. Even if they emerge fully, they can still lead to gum infections since it is difficult to clean them.
When Is It Necessary To Get Wisdom Teeth Removed?
Most dentists recommend extracting third molars to prevent potential complications in the future. However, wisdom teeth removal is not required in every situation. If your wisdom teeth erupt normally and remain healthy, they may not be a risk to your oral health. But if you experience any of the following difficulties, it is best to consult a dental professional for tooth extraction:
- Severe pain or discomfort
- Inflammation of the gums
- Impacted wisdom teeth
- Cyst formation
- Damage to neighboring teeth
- Crowding of teeth
- Significantly decayed wisdom teeth
- Tumors
These complications can worsen over time if left unaddressed. You may find temporary pain relief with over-the-counter medications, but the issues will progress unless the root cause is treated.
Do Healthy Wisdom Teeth Need To Be Extracted?
If your wisdom teeth have fully erupted in an upright position and do not pose any risk to your other teeth, there’s no need for extraction. Many people have perfectly healthy wisdom teeth that contribute to effective chewing and eating when in good condition.
In some cases, dental issues may arise even with healthy wisdom teeth due to inadequate cleaning. Since third molars are located at the back of the mouth, it can be challenging to clean them properly. You can ask your dentist about the best techniques to brush and clean your teeth. Additionally, using mouthwash can be helpful, as it can reach even the hidden nooks and crannies.
